The reason for not being able to stop, is you are recording directly to an acetate master, if you make a mistake and stop, you have to start with a fresh platter.

The recording dates were December 16, 17, 19 in 1983. It was Yamaha?s new digital synths and JNH with the boys from TOTO playing at the ?83 NAMM show. It was all electronics and Jeff w/a percussionist. It was getting all the boys into the studio which was a challenge.

JNH said that not only was it almost impossible getting the guys on the phone, but he couldn?t even get their managers! They were supposed to record in May of ?83 but a new TOTO album was priority. Sheffield Labs needed the LP by Jan of ?84 and it wasn?t looking good. So, they told JNH they would give him one weekend in Dec.

It was all DX 7?s and GS 1?s. The whole LP was produced by synths w/t exception of drums & percussion. All various colors were pre-set on the synths in the same manner that the stops can be set on a church organ. One of the synths developed amnesia in its pre-set box, and a replacement had to be found and programmed. AC plus mysteriously became unplugged, and occasional buzzes and wheezes would develop. David Schnee wanted a ton of backbeat and Jeff provided adequately.

The first take was for familiarization and take two was the final deal?.until they all listen again. James felt side two wasn?t as good as side one and they do another pass. This was an LA effort born and bred.

This is a VERY important Jeff record for sure. Pocket, your post is perfect. This recording came out of the NAMM demo of the NEW Yamaha DX7 live demo. Jeff is so real and raw on this recording. It make me realize how much I DON'T know.

It's a must have, Jeff fan or not.

for the tech savy, the version of Slippin Away on the MD/Paiste demo was a diffent version then the version on the JNH and Friends disc.
It only features Jeff and David Paich on keys and Jeff plays a little more cymbals like the Paiste sound discs.

Hey guys, sorry it took so long to post these. Here's 2 of them so far, and I'll try and upload some more as I go. The first tune 'L'Daddy' is probably my favourite tune on this, and is just such a funky groove. Second tune is a gorgeous porcaro shuffle and absolutely slammin'.

Right on Randy...that MD sample was indeed very cool! I loved those little vinyl things from MD. It was all Jeff and David and raw and oh so cool!

Very cool CD to have for any drummer wanting to hear the master Jeff Porcaro. His Dad Joe played percussion on the JNH recording. If you crank this recording you can seriously damage your speakers because of the punchy drum sound that was captured. For me, this is really what makes this such an outstanding Jeff recording. It is very un-processed and open so you hear the playing like it is live in your living room.
